Daily Current Affairs Update --- 5th February, 2017



• India is going to host a key meet on nuclear security in New Delhi next week.


• Anand Kumar Gupta has taken over the charge as Director commercial at National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC).


• AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala elected as the President of the legislature party.
Important Note : She is expected to take over as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on February 9.


• A penalty of equal amount will be levied for any cash transaction of over ₹3 lakh from April 1, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has announced .

°Note : A ban on cash transaction of over ₹3 lakh has been proposed in the Union Budget.


• England Test captain Alastair Cook has been honoured with Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).


• The Ministry of AYUSH has constituted a 16-member committee under the chairmanship of Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor, S-Vyasa University, to prepare a Yoga Protocol for Diabetes Control.


• In a move to encourage active participation in the assembly poll especially by women voters, the government of Goa conducted a unique experiment, which involved giving away 600 pink teddy bears to first time women voters across the state.


• The Qatar Airways has launched the World’s longest scheduled commercial service to ply between Doha to Auckland. The inaugural service of Flight QR920 took off on February 5, 2017 from Doha and will take 16 hours and 20 minutes to travel 14,535 kilometers to reach Auckland in New Zealand.


• KPMG India has appointed the former US government official Arun M Kumar as the Chairman and CEO to lead KPMG India operations.


• Google has announced to sell its Terra Bella business which includes a group of SkySat Earth imaging satellites to an imaging start-up, Planet Labs .


• Sports Minister Vijay Goel  laid the foundation stone of the India’s first Center of Excellence for Para Sports to help para athletes in showcasing their skills and talent further both at the national and international level in Gujarat for Rs 50 Cr.


• Basketball Federation of India announced that India will host FIBA Women’s Asia Cup basketball tournament in July 2017 in Bengaluru .
India also set to host the FIBA U-16 Women’s Asian Championship from October 22 to 28 in Hyderabad .


• Indian team defeated Malaysia 2-0 in Hong Kong to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Junior Squash championship.

• Pankaj Advani has won the Indian National Snooker Championship in Pune to register his 29th national title.


• Sanjeev Sanyal, former global strategist and Managing Director of Deutshe Bank, was today appointed as Principal Economic Adviser.


• India's Lakshya Sen has become the World No 1 Junior Badminton player.


• The most expensive silk saree was made by Chennai Silks and was sold for around Rs.40 lakh according to Guinness World Records.

• The Union Ministry of Railways and Italy’s public sector rail company Ferrovie Dello Stato Italiane Group (FS Group) has signed MoU for technical cooperation in rail sector especially in the area of safety and modernisation.


• India’s first Centre of Excellence in Automation Technology was inaugurated by the Gujarat Technological University at its campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in Ahmedabad .


• Pranab Mukherjee opened the annual ‘Udyanotsav‘ of the Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 4, 2017. The Mughal Gardens will remain open for general public from February 4, 2017 to March 12, 2017.


• Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Home Affairs inaugurated the programme on ‘Inner Strength and Disaster Resilience’ in New Delhi. The programme was organised by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).


• Centre Forms Six-Member Committee to Look into Haj Subsidy Issue. Jeddah Afzal Amanullah will be the head of the committee.


• Iran government banned the United States wrestlers from participating in the freestyle World Cup to be held in February 2017 as a counter-move against President Donald Trump’s executive order suspending visas for Iran.


• Former CBI Director Joginder Singh passed away after a prolonged illness in New Delhi. He was 77.

• 31st Surajkund International Crafts Mela began .
The mela is being hosted jointly by the Haryana Tourism Corporation and Surajkund Mela Authority, in collaboration with the Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs.

• • The Centre today approved an investment of Rs 1,350 crore to Andhra Pradesh for improvement of basic urban infrastructure under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) over the next three fiscals.


• The Sports Ministry received a hike of ₹350 crore in the Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday.
Jaitley allocated a total of ₹1,943 crore to sports, compared to the ₹1,592 crore given last year.


• To augment income of farmers budget has proposed setting-up of a Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund with a corpus of Rs 8,000 crores over three years.

• On the occasion of Anti-Leprosy Day, the Union Government has launched nationwide “Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign (SLAC)”.


• India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) kicked off its operations by rolling out pilot services in Raipur and Ranchi.The bank will offer an interest rate of 4.5% on deposits up to Rs25,000; 5% on deposits of Rs25,000-50,000 and 5.5% on Rs50,000-1,00,000.


• Future Generali India Insurance Company (FGII) Enters Into Bancassurance Tie-Up With Bank Of Maharashtra .


• The first edition of the North East Investors Summit was inaugurated on January 29, 2017 by the Union Textiles Minister, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani in Shillong, Meghalaya.

• Today (29th January 2017) is National Immunization Day.


• The Arunachal Pradesh tableau has bagged the 1st position among the 17 state tableaux that took part in this year's Republic Day parade. The tableau had depicted the Yak Dance, a popular pantomime of the Mahayana sect of Buddhist Tribes in the state.

Note : Tripura's tableau got the second place while the Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu tableaux were jointly adjudged third.


• The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been adjudged the best marching contingent for the 5th time among the different paramilitary forces that took part in the Republic Day parade.


• Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been appointed to US President Donald Trump's manufacturing council, led by Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris.


• The India Post has received payments bank licence from the Reserve Bank of India to start rollout of banking operations commercially.

° Important Points to Note :
  India Post Payments Bank is the 3rd entity to receive payments bank permit after telecom major Airtel and digital payments startup Paytm.

  Payments banks can accept deposits  up to ₹1 lakh per account from individuals and small businesses.


• Swiss tennis player Roger Federer defeated Spain's Rafael Nadal in five sets in the Australian Open men's singles final today, to win a record 18th Grand Slam title.


• In Australian Open Tennis, American-Colombian duo of Abigail Spears and Juan Sebastian Cabal defeated Indo-Croatian pair of Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig in Mixed doubles final.


• In Australian Open tennis, Serena Williams beat her sister Venus Williams in the final to win her 23rd Grand Slam singles title.


• Ant Financial, e-commerce giant Alibaba’s financial arm, has reached an agreement to acquire American money-transfer major MoneyGram for $880 million, in a deal that will expand the firm’s business in the US after India and Thailand.


• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has decided to set up weather stations in 660 districts of the country for better and prompt weather forecasting with major focus on rain-fed and non-rain-fed areas to give crop specific advisories. The system would be launched in phased manner. Initially, IMD has planned to set up the system in 130 districts and gradually increase it to 660 by 2019.The IMD has also tied up with the Ministry of Agriculture to use the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs).


• The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, Nitin Jairam Gadkari, inaugurated a 3-lane Brahmaputra Bridge at Saraighat  in Guwahati on January  29, 2017. As a part of the event, the Minister announced that the government would spend Rs 15,000 crores to develop 1,253 kilometres of roads in Assam into National Highways over the next few years.


• Indian-American entrepreneur,  Gururaj Deshpande has decided to launch India’s largest startup incubation centre at Hubballi (earlier Hubli) in Karnataka.
